Style Spotlight: Eva Marie Saint

For my first post, I'm going to focus on the fashion of actress Eva Marie Saint. First, I would like to give some background information on the lovely actress including her films and personal life.

Eva Marie Saint was born in Newark, New Jersey. She studied acting in college at Bowling Green State University. Surprisingly to me, she did more TV movies then those shown in theaters. One thing I learned that really surprised me was that she voiced Katara in Legend of Korra! I had no idea!

Of course, Ms. Saint is most well known for playing Edie Doyle in On the Waterfront (which was her film debut) along with her part in the Hitchcock classic North by Northwest. Her performance in both films were phenomenal!

Now, time to look at how her style changed throughout the decades!

1940s

Eva Marie Saint started her work as an actress in 1946 when she had a small role in the game show Campus Hoopla, in which she was a commercial spokeswoman.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any pictures of her when she was in this show. Most likely this is because the game show only lasted about a year. But, I did find a picture of her in 1949. I didn't see anything about this being a publicity photo for a TV show, but in this year she did appear in an episode of Studio One. But, it looks as though this was just part of a photoshoot of some sort.

Here we can see that she's got some classic 40s style. She definitely looks very different from her typical 50s style I am used to! Her hair is nicely curled, but slightly untamed. They didn't worry about making the curls look too smooth as they often did in the 1950s.

We can only see the top portion of her outfit, but it's so very 40s. Her white blouse looks a bit loose in the sleeves but with a big collar. We can't see if she is wearing a skirt of pants as both were in style for women at the time, but we can see a classic accessory for the time: a pearl necklace! Pearls are just so pretty, whether they be real or not, and just add class to any outfit. (Seriously, you could be wearing pajamas but add a pearl necklace and BAM! Instant class!)

Her makeup looks very soft and simple, as that was popular for makeup at the time. It honestly doesn't look like she is wearing any eye makeup, although it may just be because it's very light and soft. The eyebrows were styled very naturally. It looks as though she doesn't have much on her face in the way of foundation and powder, etc. since I can see what looks to be some freckles on her face. Of course, this picture is in black and white so it's hard to see all the details but if I had to make a guess, I would say that she's sporting some red lips here considering it was the most popular lip color for the time.

1950s

Photo Sources:

One thing I noticed from photos of Ms. Saint in the 40s compared to the 50s, was that her hair was incredibly light, almost white, in the 50s. In the photograph of her from 1949, I looks as though her hair may have been a little bit darker. So, either she dyed her hair a platinum blonde (which is likely as this was a popular hair color in Hollywood at the time), or the 40s picture was simply taken in a darker lighting. Anyways, her hair changed quite a bit in 50s whether she dyed it or not. When her hair was curled, it always looked very smooth and neat. Not a hair out of place! It was also cut fairly short.

Her style was very classicly 50s. She was very chic, in many photos I found of her, she was wearing a lot of black. Her prominent use of the color black in many photo shoots helped make her light hair color stand out. I also found that she was usually wearing pearls. If not pearls, some other elegant necklace.

Her makeup always looked very simplistic and kept her looking very young in all of the pictures I found. Her eyeshadow was always light and soft. It didn't look like she wore eyeliner in any of the photos I found, or she simply wore a very small amount. Her lips were usually done red or pinky-peach colors.

1960s

The picture shown here is from her film Exodus and even though this film was made in 1960, you can already see some of the 60s style coming into affect. Her hair is fairly similar, but it's got some more volume in it than before which was of course a prominent part in hairstyles of the time. Tons and tons of teasing and hairspray!

Her clothes still look very clean cut and nice. There were three prominent styles in the 1960s, the classy simplistic styles (think Jackie Kennedy), the mod style, and the crazy groovy styles. She was definitely part of the classy 60s style!

Her makeup isn't as soft and I can see that she is definitely wearing some eyeliner here. She also has a nice light peachy lip. Lighter colored lips were popular in the 60s, and she looks so lovely with it here.

1970s

This picture is from a comedy film she made with Bob Hope in 1972. Her style is pretty simple, but very pretty! I absolutely love the way her hair is styled here. Eva Marie really loved having her hair in curls but throughout each decade it's done in a different way! Here it's in a nice updo. Her hair also looks more golden here than it had in the 50s and 60s.

Moving onto her clothes, she's shown wearing a light pink button up top with some crochet detailing. I can't tell if she is wearing a skirt or pants but it looks as though it is made from velvet and is a brown color? The 70s was an interesting time for making different color combos.

Unfortunately, the quality of the photo makes it hard to see her makeup, but it looks pretty simplistic with a nude lip.

How YOU Can Incorporate Eva Marie Saint's Style Into Your Wardrobe

Made on Polyvore
From looking through many photos of Eva Marie, she was of course most prominent during the 1950s, so I will be focusing on her style during this time for the outfit inspiration. One thing that was consistent in her style throughout many decades was that she has a nice, simplistic, classy approach to style.

All you need are some classic black staples. Black simple (but pretty!) tops, black pants, black skirts, black heels, and black flats are all fashion staples that I think everyone should have in their closet. Of course, you must have some pearls in order to be Eva Marie! Then, just add some very simple eye and face makeup with a fun lip color and you're all set!

I hope that you liked this post!
